2008 Earthquake Engineering Research Institute Annual Meeting:
Hurricane Katrina - Lessons for Earthquake Risk Reduction
On February 9, structural engineer and earthquake risk
consultant Kate Stillwell spoke in lieu of RMS' Dr. Patricia
Grossi on the "Consequences of
Cascading Catastrophic Events" in the session "Dealing with
Low-Probability/High-Consequence Events: What Recent
Catastrophes are Teaching Us."

On February 8, Peter Nakada spoke on "A New Parametric
Industry Loss Index for European Windstorm" and participated in a
panel discussion with AIR & EQECAT representatives on "Advancing
the Art of Risk Modeling."

March 19, Dr. Katie Coughlin, senior catastrophe risk modeler,
participated on the panel "Hurricane Forecasting: A
Discussion of Recent Developments and Implications for the 2008
Hurricane Season." Also on March 19, Peter Nakada, managing director of RMS Consulting, participated on the panel "Developments in Indemnity and
Non-Indemnity Structures."

Catastrophe Modeling Forum: Changing Climatic Dynamics and
Catastrophe Model Projections, New York Dr. Shree Khare and
Dr. Nicola Patmore participated with other leading
climatologists and modelers in a forum hosted by the Insurance
Institute of America discussing the impacts of climate change on
catastrophe modeling.

On June 25, Dr. Celine Herweijer, principal scientist of future
climate, participated in a round table discussion on "Coastal
Cities in the Global South: Waiting for the Next Mega-Disaster."

Agency, Vienna Dr.
Gordon Woo gave an invited talk
on quantifying terrorism risk at the IAEA, an agency that holds
a pivotal role in preventing terrorist access to nuclear weapons.

14th World Conference on
Earthquake Engineering, Beijing Fourteen
RMS researchers and model managers participated in sessions
at the World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, including Dr. Haresh Shah, founder of RMS, who
spoke on "Professor Takuji Kobori
& His Intuitive Understanding of Seismic Risk
Management" on October 13. On October 14, Chief Risk
Officer Dr. Weimin Dong co-chaired the session "Earthquake
Risk & Insurance: From Science and Technology to Insurance:
Earthquake Insurance as a Risk," and presented the talk,
"Evolution of Earthquake Risk Modeling." Other RMS speakers
included Gordon Woo, Andrew Coburn, Jean Savy, Hesaam Aslani,
Shahram Taghavi, Domenico DelRe, Manabu Masuda, and Taronne
Tabucchi.

Francisco Bay Area, State of California Department of
Conservation On October 22, Dr. Mary
Lou Zoback, vice president of earthquake risk applications, will
present the Risk Modeling Keynote address on the subject of the
Hayward-Rodgers Creek Fault.
